Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay learned to love art through the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a young student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash inside the house that belonged to a member on the jury. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the publicity business. DuVernay joined a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
